Jeff Hadley Cup
Vermont National CC
October 17, 2011

The Jeff Hadley Cup is a Ryder Cup style format pitting the Vermont Senior Chapter members (50 & older) - Team Depends - against the Junior Chapter member (under 50) - Team Pampers.  The 2011 Jeff Hadley Cup was won in convincing fashion by Team Depends yesterday at Vermont National CC.  Kudos go to all the participants for surviving in conditions at times a bit trying. The Vermont Chapter Seniors have control of the Hadley trophy and bragging rights for the next year.

A hearty thanks goes out to all the folks at VNCC for allowing us to conduct the Ryder Cup format with 3 shotgun starts for the 3 formats, providing carts, lunch, and drinks.

Fall 2009
Dear Larry,

It's hard to believe that Fall is here and school is back in full swing! The First Tee National School Program is grateful to have a vast network of physical educators teaching golf and its values to elementary students all over the country.

This year, we have trained and certified more than 600 new physical educators through our in-person and online trainings. Since the program's existence more than 3,000 physical educators have been trained and certified. Our network of schools continues to grow and currently includes more than 2,900 elementary schools involving more than 1.4 million elementary students.

As the program continues to grow and more students become familiar with the game, communities will begin to establish connections and bring people together through golf.

Establishing community connections is the foundation of creating unique opportunities for students and teachers to access the game beyond the classroom. Below you will find some valuable stories and information on ways to connect people in your community through The First Tee National School Program.

Sincerely,

The First Tee National School Program Team

SwingVERMONT TAKES TEAM APPROACH

State Golf Associations Team Up to Bring Golf to Kids

All of the Vermont state golf assocaitions have taken a team approach to growing the game through The First Tee National School Program.

This joint initiative has connected the five statewide organizations (Vermont Golf Association, Vermont Women's Golf Association, Vermont PGA, Vermont Senior Golf Association, and Vermont Scholarship Fund) to more than 50 schools throughout the state. These organizations have developed a strong model that not only brings the program to schools, but connects the schools with individuals in local golf communities.

Through this friendly collaboration, the state golf organizations work together to promote the program to schools across the state through information sessions and presenting at the annual Vermont AHPERD conference.

Schools interested in  the program submit an application that shows they have a connection with a local golf community representative, as well as a commitment to cover a quarter of the cost of the program.

Establishing a connection with the local golf community before program implementation has allowed for a smooth process of planning transition activities for students. This collaborative effort has connected schools to local golf communities resulting in more children being exposed to the game.

Lincoln Teachers Spend a Day with PGA Professionals from City Courses

National School Program school districts are teaming up with local golf communities to give physical educators unique experiences with golf. In Nebraska, Lincoln Public Schools had the opportunity to partner with Lincoln City Golf Courses to plan a professional development day focused on golf.

Lincoln educators traveled to one of the local city courses and participated in a refresher on the National School Program conducted by National School Program trainer Lana Peterson. Following the refresher, PGA professionals from the Lincoln city courses conducted free lessons for all. The teachers were paired with PGA professionals from courses that are adjacent to their schools and received lessons on chipping, putting, and full swing. The PGA professionals shared tips with the teachers on teaching kids grip, stance, and posture as well as sharing information on how to involve their students in golf opportunities around Lincoln.

Communities and schools are continuing to work together to positively impact the lives of students and physical educators through The First Tee National School Program.

LPGA-USGA Girls Golf Brings Girls into the Game

LPGA-USGA Girls Golf (Girls Golf), the only national initiative of its kind, invites girls from across the United States to learn to play the game of golf in a fun, supportive atmosphere.

For 20 years, Girls Golf has provided the perfect environment to encourage interest and stimulate enthusiasm, while building self-confidence and assurance.  With more than 180 sites around the country, Girls Golf serves as an option to provide golf opportunities for National School Program students outside the classroom.

Programs are led by site directors who are LPGA or PGA teaching professionals, USGA members, Executive Women's Golf Association (EWGA) members, Hook A Kid On Golf directors, parents, members of local civic organizations or golf associations. Additionally, 44 Chapters of The First Tee include Girls Golf as part of their programming.

Whether the goal is to compete at the highest levels - as past members Brittany Lincicome and Morgan Pressel did - or to play on a high school golf team or simply to be outdoors and have fun with friends -  girls are gaining more than just an athletic skill through this program.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2009, Girls Golf is administered through a partnership between the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) and the United States Golf Association (USGA), both 501(c)(3) charitable organizations.

Online Training Available Free of Charge for Existing Schools/Teachers

We are excited to have you as a part of The First Tee Family and want to work with you to provide you with everything we can to enhance your implementation of the National School Program in your schools!

In our recent survey we learned that there are new physical educators in a few schools implementing The First Tee National School Program.   According to our records, these new teachers have not yet had the opportunity to participate and be certified through our training program. The training is free of charge and can be accessed at aytime online. This will enhance safe, effective implementation and therefore is a required element for all physical educators teaching the National School Program.

More information about The First Tee National School Program eLearning course is available on our Web site, www.thefirsttee.org/nationalschoolprogram.  Click on the "eLearning Training Information" link to preview the eCourse and eCourse schedule.  Any physical educators (new or previously certified) at a National School Program school may request registration for one of our monthly offerings free of charge.

Those physical educators new to the program will need to review and sign, along with their school principals, the attached Individual School Agreement. These forms may be faxed to (904) 940-1556, or mailed to the address provided on the form. The First Tee Home Office must have a completed and signed Individual School Agreement in order for teachers to become fully certified.

Please contact Sandie Bowen at your earliest convenience so that we can provide this valuable program to all physical educators in schools that have been sponsored in your district.

We look forward to honoring your sponsor's commitment and impacting more students and teachers in your community.

5th Annual Jeff Hadley Day

05/27/09 - Thanks for the Support!

5th Annual Jeff Hadley Day
May 27, 2009

To All Who Supported Jeff Hadley Day,

Thank you pros!!!!  You did it again!  Even though we didn’t get to play (we would have needed a snorkel for the 14th club) you helped make the 5th Annual Jeff Hadley Day another great success.  Your involvement helped attract a full field of 144 players this year, most of whom stayed, donated their registration fees, bid in the auction, bought raffle tickets and, ultimately, raised more than $30,000 for ALS research!!!!  Absolutely amazing!!!

The greens fees, equipment and all the auction, raffle and prize items you donated were key to our fund raising efforts.  Our players, especially GMNGC members, really appreciate the opportunity to play at some of the area’s best clubs.  Of course, when they show up at your place in cut-offs, tee-shirts and work boots, you may have to turn a blind eye.  You know how lax Soucy is about the dress code here at the muni.

Seriously, you pros take this event to another level.  The amateurs really look forward to playing with you and your prize and auction donations are awesome.  Most of you knew Jeff.  Some of you didn’t.  The fact that all of you continue to support Jeff’s cause and honor his memory with your participation means so much to me.  Thank you for keeping Jeff’s dream of curing ALS alive.

I hope you will all consider playing in our rain date tournament on Tuesday, October 13, 2009.  We just have to hope it doesn’t snow that day!

Until then, have a great summer.  Hit ‘em long and straight!

 Very Sincerely,
Alice Hadley

Not all the days were filled with meetings during the PGA Annual Meeting -

First Tee Informational Meeting and Golf Event

9/28/08 -

On Sunday, September 28, 2008, the allied golf associations in Vermont held an informational and complimentary event on
The Vermont First Tee National School Program, together with a 9 hole golf outing at the Killington Golf Resort.
Representatives from the Vermont PGA attending this meeting were RJ Austin, Sugarbush (2nd from left), Larry Kelley, Kelley Golf Sales (2nd from right)
and Dave Pfannenstein, Killington Golf Resort (right).  Standing with them to their left is Will Bratton, First Tee National School Program Specialist.

The focus of The First Tee® National School Program is to establish a lifelong interest in golf by engaging young people (K-5)
in a structured golf curriculum that promotes personal character development within a physical education setting.  The program teaches elementary
school children The First Tee Nine Core Values:  honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgment,
using the game of golf as the platform.  Instruction takes place during physical educational classes with the children using developmentally appropriate SNAG® equipment.

4th Annual Jeff Hadley Day

05/28/2008 - To All Who Played in Jeff Hadley Day,

Thank you pros!!!!  You did it again!  The 4th Annual Jeff Hadley Day was another great success.  Thanks to you, the Jeff Hadley Family Fund will, this year, donate at least $40,000 to the ALS Therapy Development Institute (www.als.net) specifically for familial ALS research.

You guys really came out in force this year.  Dave Pfannenstein and Dave Christy didn’t even have to play.  I don’t know if we can allow that to happen again.  Furthermore, the Committee is reviewing the rules of registration.  All 4 gross winning pros brought their own teams.
Can you say, “ringers”?  Larry Kelley III, I’m talking to you!

I hope you will all consider playing again next year, the Wednesday after Memorial Day.

Have a great summer.  Hit ‘em long and straight!

John Lombardy, Sr. 1918 - 2007

05/07/07 - The Vermont PGA wishes to extend its condolences to the family of John Lombardy, Jr, Head Professional at Ekwanok Country Club.  His father, John Lombardy, Sr. died Sunday, May 6, 2007 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.  Mr. Lombardy's entire golf career revolved around Ekwanok Country Club.

The following is taken from the May 8th edition of the Rutland Herald:

Mr. Lombardy was born March 30, 1918, in Manchester. He was a World War II veteran who served in the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, CO.

Johnny started his golf career as an Ekwanok Country Club caddie at age 9. He was just 19 when Bobby Jones made one of his visits to Manchester to play Ekwanok. Lombardy was assigned to caddie for Jones. He observed Jones' gentlemanly conduct and decided then and there to make golf his career. After winning the caddie championship for the third time, the young Lombardy was given the opportunity to advance above the rank of caddie, when he was offered a job in the pro shop. The following season, he was promoted to assistant in charge of the Equinox golf course which was then managed by Ekwanok. Three years later, Johnny was appointed head professional at Equinox. In 1941, Lombardy played in an exhibition match with Craig Wood, the year Wood won the Masters and the U.S. Open. In 1943, he scored a 65 at Equinox, a new course record which has yet to be broken. In the Vermont Open in 1963 and 1964, Lombardy was low Vermont professional.

In 1960, Johnny installed a golf school in the basement of his home in Manchester Village, complete with tee, driving net and putting green. When the school opened, Golfdom Magazine published an article with several photographs featuring the school in operation. For many years, Johnny was personal golf instructor and friend to Mr. Lincoln Isham, great-great-grandson of Abraham Lincoln. Mr. Isham visited the Lombardy home each evening for a social visit and lesson.

Mr. Lombardy continued to serve Ekwanok over a period of 54 years. He became head PGA professional in 1952, a post he held for 30 years until his retirement in 1982, when the position was taken over by his son, John Lombardy Jr.

Johnny is survived by his wife, Lydia Ruth Lombardy, and his five children; two sons, John Lombardy Jr. of Manchester and James Lombardy of Melbourne, FL; three daughters, Mrs. Linda Piccolella of Melbourne, FL, Mrs. Joy Alexopoulos of Manchester and Mrs. Leigh Miles of Rutland; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Susan Roth-Nichol of Massapequa, NY; a sister, Mrs. Marion Batchelder of Manchester; 11 grandchildren. Johnny's first wife, Joan, predeceased him in 1987.

The Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 9, 2007, at St. Paul's Catholic Church. A private family graveside service will follow in Dellwood Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Brewster Funeral Home, 34 Park Place, Manchester, VT, on Tuesday from 7-8:30 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Ekwanok Country Club Scholarship Trust Fund or the Burr and Burton Academy Athletic Department, c/o Brewster Funeral Service, P.O. Box 885, Manchester, VT 05255.

For directions or to send a personal e-mail condolence to the family, please visit http://www.sheafuneralhomes.com.

Jeff Hadley loses courageous battle with ALS

05/25/06 - Former Green Mountain National Golf Course Head Professional, Jeff Hadley passed away Thursday, May 25, 2006 due to complications from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease).  Jeff had been the Head Golf Professional at GMNGC from the opening in the summer of 1996 until he retired last fall due to his illness. His patient methods of teaching and his fondness for developing awareness of the game made him very popular with his members and endeared him to all in the community.  He will be deeply missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.  His Golf professional career in Vermont began at Stowe Golf Course in the early 1980’s. His leadership and excellent reputation at Stowe fostered his recruitment to Green Mountain National in 1996.  Diagnosed with ALS in the fall of 2004, Jeff became an active fundraiser for Driving 4 Life and other ALS related charitable organizations.  When Jeff learned of his diagnosis he realized that there was nothing he would rather do than continue to be at the golf course promoting the game he loved and helping students improve and enjoy their game.  Learning first-hand of the challenges for the physically disabled to learn the game of golf, Jeff helped to introduce the First Swing Program to Vermont.   This program helps the physically challenged enjoy the game. First Swing helps teach golf professionals, physical therapists, recreation professionals and others in the health care field the basics of teaching the sport to those with disabilities.   Jeff had the distinct honor of being named Vermont Chapter and New England Section PGA Golf Professional of the Year in 2005. The PGA Golf Professional of the Year is the Association’s highest honor paid to a PGA professional.  This Award is reserved for the elite golf professional who, throughout his or her PGA career, has demonstrated outstanding leadership, exceptional overall performance as a golf professional, distinguished service to the Association and has contributed to the growth of the great game of golf.  Jeff Hadley’s courage, work ethic, dedication to his employers, staff and golfing public was an inspiration to all who knew him.   Jeff is survived by his loving wife Alice, family members including his mother and three siblings and friends, who were all with him in his final struggles with his disease.

Okemo Mountain Resort purchases Windham Golf Club

04/04/04 -  Tim and Diane Mueller, owners of Okemo Mountain Resort and Okemo Valley Golf Club have announced that they have completed the sale for the purchase of Windham Golf Club in Chester, VT from Windham Golf, Inc.

Windham Golf Club was the former nine-hole Tater Hill Golf Course and is located just 17 miles southwest of Ludlow.  It was previously known for its small greens, moderate to high degree of difficulty and challenging layout.  The course witnessed several years of gradual modification in the 1990's, including the addition of nine new holes of golf, until it reached its final form in 2002.

The Mueller's are no strangers to golf course construction and golf operations.  In the late 1990's, they hired Jim Remy as the General Manager/Director of Golf to oversee the construction and operation of the highly acclaimed Okemo Valley Golf Club in Ludlow, VT.  Okemo Valley has fast become one of the most desired golf destinations in New England.

"Under our ownership, the new Tater Hill Golf Club will undergo significant capital improvements starting this April," said Jim Remy.  "Our plan is to retain the name of Tater Hill to preserve the tradition and history of the course.  Once construction is underway, the original Tater Hill 9-holes of golf open will remain open to the members and playing public, while we reconstruct and enhance the layout of the newer 9-holes."

The emphasis for the new Tater Hill Golf Club will be placed upon the overall quality of the course maintenance to ensure that the golf course will be in prime playing condition every day of the season, along with increased services and amenities for the members and guests.

"We are pleased to announce that John Pawlak, a PGA Class A Golf Professional, has been hired as the Head Golf Professional and Manager and will oversee the golf operations at Tater Hill Golf Club," commented Jim Remy.  "As a PGA Professional, John is one of the best and we are pleased to welcome him into our Okemo family."

This event kicks off the 2000 VPGA tournament schedule, with the first Pro-Am scheduled for next Monday, May 1st at Neshobe Country Club.  Click on  the Tournament Schedule Page to find out more about this event.

This web site is for you - the PGA Professionals of the Vermont Chapter.  Let us know what you want to see included in this site.  Any and all feedback, comments or suggestions are welcome!  We want this to be an active, helpful, informative and useful site for all of you.
